From My Family to Yours: Why I Do What I Do

When families meet me for the first time, they often ask, “Why did you choose this work?” The truth is, I didn’t just choose it. It chose me. My journey as a school psychologist, advocate, and now business owner has been shaped by my own family’s story.

Three generations, one mission: supporting children and their families with love, expertise, and hope.

If you’ve ever had that moment where your heart tells you something about your child, but you’re not quite sure what to do next, you’re not alone.

For me, one of those moments came years ago when I noticed my nephew was showing characteristics of autism. It wasn't an easy thing to bring up to my sister.  I realized how hard it can be to hear that your child might experience the world differently. I wanted to speak to her gently as both a sister and an auntie, highlighting the unique strengths I saw while offering my support every step of the way. To my relief, she didn’t get upset. Instead, we both sat there in tears as she told me she had felt something was different all along, she just didn’t know where to start or who to ask for help.

That moment changed me.

I got to walk beside my sister through the school process, speaking up for her and my nephew, this time from the “other side”... the family side. It gave me a whole new perspective on what parents and caregivers go through. I saw the fear, the uncertainty, the hope, and the fierce love up close. And I promised myself from then on, I would always start by listening, truly listening, to families first.

Because here’s the truth, you are the expert on your child. You know them better than anyone else. My role isn’t to replace your voice, it’s to help you find it, strengthen it, and make sure it’s heard in the spaces where it matters most.

Family Is at the Heart of What We Do

Fast forward to today, and I’m still holding that promise close. Only now, I get to do it with my daughter by my side. SaVanna is an incredible speech-language pathologist, and together we’ve created a space where psychology and speech services work hand-in-hand to support families.

Opening NeuroChamp Educational Psychology & Speech Services together has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Through her own professional journey, we’ve come full circle, combining our skills, our passion, and our love for helping children into something we can share with families like yours.

A Little About Me

I’m a wife of 28 years, a mom of two grown kids (and yes, I still get to work with them in the field, a parent’s dream come true!), and most importantly, “Grandma” to my sweet granddaughter, who lights up my world. When she runs into the house calling for me, everything else fades away. And come this February, we will meet grandbaby number two!

My happy place? A good book at the beach, toes in the sand, listening to the waves. I love traveling, usually somewhere tropical, but I’ve also fallen in love with exploring Europe. And through all of it, my faith in Jesus is what keeps me grounded and reminds me why I do this work in the first place.
